Register Your Dog

How and Why You Need to Register Your Dog

New Zealand has rules around dog ownership to protect our dogs and the general public and you must register your dog with the local council.

If you own a dog, you must register them with your local council.

Dog registration fees help your council:

Ensure all dogs are registered

Respond to reports of dog attacks and complaints about barking and stray animals,

Provide shelter services: impoundment, care for strays and reuniting dogs with their owners,

Re-home dogs through our adoption programmes,

Provide dog safety education for dog owners, schools and the public,

Enforce compliance, issue infringements and patrol beaches and parks,

Prosecute serious dog-related offences (under the Dog Control Act ).
